Kitesurfing

A single dark kite high in a clear blue sky above a wide sand beach and a long line of breaking surf.

Wind, water and a line of kites

Kitesurfing asks for two things: room to move, and water you are happy to fall into. A warm, open shore gives you both.

Learning to read the wind

A first day on a kite is mostly spent on land, learning what the bar does and what the wind does to it. It looks like slow progress and it is not: by the time you are standing in the water, the hard part — trusting a piece of fabric fifteen metres above your head — is already behind you.

A sport with a horizon in it

What stays with people afterwards is rarely the jumps. It is the long flat runs: the board humming under your feet, the kite parked overhead, nothing in front of you but water and the line where it meets the sky. An hour goes by without being noticed.
